Celebrate National Poetry Month and Earth Day with one great collaborative project! Become iPoets, publishing your Earth Day inspired poems with others in a great big beautiful Book Creator book!
This project is something I have wanted to start for a long time now, and I’m SO thrilled to combine a few of my favorite things – poetry, collaborative writing, iPads, Book Creator, and amazing Kinder, 1st and Second grade classrooms from all over!
Here are the details –
- Sign up HERE.
- Read books and poems to inspire.
- Write a collaborative poem with your class.
- Publish it on your iPad (with the final product as a Book Creator page).
- Tweet as you create with #iPoets16
- Export your page to Google Drive, and share the file with me by April 27th (I’ll send you another Google Form after you sign up)
- Then, download the final book and enjoy it with your class! You’ll be able to tweet other classes and share your reactions to the book.
Here are some resources to support your Poetry Month and Earth Day iPoets Project.
Start with the best part, the books! Here’s a ThingLink of some of my favorites.
Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger is one of my favorites and would be so much fun to use as a mentor text.
Here’s an example – Read this book, then choose a color to write a poem about. It could even be as simple as a list poem of where your students see that color in nature!
Then, collaboratively write your poem as a class and get to publishing. The world is your oyster here! Just make sure your final project is a Book Creator page. This is a great time to discuss fonts, sizes, layouts and more! Your students will love being publishers!
Make your page as simple as taking a picture of your writing, and have your students record the poem in Book Creator. This page also has a student illustration from the Paper app.
You could also have some app smashing fun and make a video or image to share your poem! If you’re looking for more inspiration check out these slides from my iPoets presentation. You can use apps like Pic Collage, ChatterPix Kids, iMovie, Adobe Voice, Word Clouds, Shadow Puppet EDU, or more! Whatever tools your students are comfortable creating with that saves to the camera roll.
Then you’ll save your page and share it with me. I’ll send you directions after you sign up.
I’ll put the book, or books, together depending on how many participants we get (I may separate them by grade level). You’ll be able to download them and tweet out your reactions to other classes.
I hope you’ll become iPoets and join our Poetry Month and Earth day iPoets project!
Sign up here, then look for an email from me soon. I’ll also tweet ideas and resources to #iPoets16.
